Universal Religion and the American SpiriT

Universal Religion and the American Spirit

Union of Saints

Religion has contributed significantly to the development of human civilization. Throughout history, religious traditions have contributed to systems of learning, philosophy, law, charitable service, architecture, music, and community life. They have encouraged moral reflection, inspired compassion, strengthened communities, and provided hope during periods of hardship and uncertainty. History also demonstrates that religion has influenced conflict, persecution, and division when separated from its highest principles. These historical experiences encourage continued reflection on how faith contributes to peace, understanding, resilience, and the well-being of communities.

The Union of Saints approaches this subject through historical understanding, thoughtful reflection, and intellectual honesty. We recognize that every religious tradition has developed within its own historical, cultural, and geographical setting while contributing to humanity's understanding of life, purpose, and community. Each tradition reflects a distinct historical experience and contributes valuable insight concerning stewardship, service, wisdom, human dignity, and the pursuit of peace. The Union of Saints encourages appreciation for these enduring contributions while respecting the beliefs, histories, practices, and identities of every religious tradition.

Catholicism, Christianity, and the American Foundation

Catholicism and Christianity have contributed substantially to the historical development of the United States. From early Catholic missions and Acadian communities to Protestant congregations established throughout the American colonies, Christian traditions encouraged the development of schools, charitable organizations, hospitals, and local communities. Their influence extended into education, charitable service, community leadership, and the daily lives of many Americans. These historical contributions continue to provide context for understanding the relationship between faith, community, and public service throughout the nation's development.

For many Americans, faith became an enduring part of family life and community responsibility. Religious practice encouraged service to one's neighbors, strengthened families, promoted charitable works, and created a shared sense of moral responsibility. These principles influenced generations of educators, clergy, public servants, volunteers, and community leaders who strengthened the communities in which they lived and served. Their contributions remain an important part of America's historical and cultural heritage.

Among Christianity's enduring teachings, forgiveness remains one of its most significant contributions. Forgiveness encourages reconciliation while recognizing the natural and intrinsic worth of every individual. Mercy, humility, compassion, and service strengthen families, communities, and human relationships while encouraging peace, understanding, and responsible stewardship. These principles continue to contribute to the development of healthy communities and enduring relationships.

Wisdom Among Traditions

The Union of Saints recognizes that wisdom has developed among many civilizations and religious traditions. Throughout history, communities have sought to understand life, creation, moral responsibility, and humanity's relationship with God or Source. These efforts have contributed to philosophy, education, religious thought, and community life while encouraging continued reflection concerning the human experience.

Ancient Egyptian civilization contributed enduring reflections concerning order, creation, morality, and humanity's relationship with eternity. Jewish tradition preserved important history, covenant, justice, and  enduring values. Greek philosophy advanced reason, ethics, and intellectual inquiry. Roman civilization contributed lasting principles of law, governance, and public responsibility. Together, these traditions contributed significantly to the historical development of philosophy, ethics, law, and religious thought.

The Union of Saints also recognizes the enduring contributions of Indigenous traditions, Acadian Catholicism, Catholicism, Basque heritage, Celtic Heritage, Protestant Christianity, Quakerism, Buddhism, and many other communities whose histories have contributed to America's understanding of peace, spirituality, compassion, and service. Every tradition contributes a distinct historical perspective that enriches our understanding of the human experience. Historical understanding encourages appreciation for these contributions while respecting the beliefs, practices, histories, and identities of every religious and cultural tradition.

The American Spirit

The Union of Saints understands the American Spirit as the enduring spirit of Americans. It is our soul, our songs, our traditions, and the memories passed from one generation to the next. It is our parades, celebrations, balloon rallies, pledges, families, histories, and communities. It is our heritage, our service, and the honor we give to our military veterans and all who have served before us. It is found in the earth beneath our feet, the unique view of the stars shining through our trees, the mountains, rivers, and the ocean breeze that reminds us we are American-spirited.

The American Spirit is the way we smile, speak, laugh, and care for one another. It is the clothes we wear, the food we prepare, the sports we play, and the games our children learn from those who came before us. It is the poems we recite, the sayings of our grandparents, the songs we still sing, and the stories that become family traditions. It lives in old buildings, cemeteries, stone walls, monuments, statues, churches, storefronts, libraries, and town squares. It is in our music, our books, our movies, our family recipes, the soups we make, the cookies we share, the apple seeds we plant, the leaves that fall every autumn, the flag we wave, and the neighbors next door who have remained friends for years. The American Spirit surrounds us because it lives in the ordinary things we preserve and pass forward with love.

Within the Union of Saints, the American Spirit is our soul and faith. We believe God has entrusted every person and generation with the responsibility to preserve our culture, strengthen our communities, honor our ancestors, and leave a better inheritance for the next generation. Our faith is expressed through volunteering, service, historical understanding, peace, gratitude, and love of neighbor. As the Union of Saints continues to grow, we seek to walk this path together, preserving the American Spirit through our actions, our communities, and our enduring commitment to one another and to future generations.

Official Definition of the American Spirit
